First distinct observations of a smaller black hole in OJ 287

Several collaborating research groups, including a team from the Jagiellonian University, have confirmed the presence of two supermassive black holes in the active nucleus of the distant galaxy OJ 287. The existence of a pair of black holes was first suggested by astronomers from the University of Turku, Finland, back in 1982.

Dr. Piotr Guzik, a graduate of the Doctoral School in astronomy at UJ, has been awarded in the 18th edition of the Artur Rojszczak Prize competition. The scientist was honored for his popularization of astronomy-related issues and activities for the protection of nature. For years he has been involved in the study of comets and other small bodies of the Solar System.
